By Amie Fenia Arimbi Jakarta (Antara) - The Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Fariz Mehdawi conveyed his wishes to Indonesia for holding a successful presidential election on July 9, 2014. "Whoever the elected president is, we wish Indonesia to have a free, fair, and successful election. Indonesia is a good example for other countries, including the Palestine, in terms of how democracy is held in a country," the ambassador remarked on Monday. Mehdawi noted that Indonesia had been a vocal activist for the rights of the Palestinian people since the era of first President Soekarno until the recent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. "The issue of Palestine has a consensus among the Indonesian people. All political parties and communities share a common voice when it comes to the Palestinian issue," emphasized the ambassador. Indonesia will be holding a presidential election on July 9, which will be contested by two presidential candidates: General (ret) Prabowo Subianto and current Jakarta Governor, Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi. Prabowo Subianto is a retired military lieutenant general and the chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), while his vice-presidential candidate, Hatta Rajasa, is a former coordinating minister for economic affairs and the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN). Jokowi is Jakarta's governor and a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), while his running mate, Jusuf Kalla (JK), is a former vice president and a senior politician of the Golkar Party. The Prabowo-Hatta pair is supported by Gerindra, PAN, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the United Development Party (PPP), the Crescent and Star Party (PBB), and the Golkar Party, whose current chairman is Aburizal Bakrie, the owner of TV One. The Jokowi-JK pair is supported by five political parties: PDIP, the Nation Awakening Party (PKB), the Peoples Conscience Party (Hanura), the Justice and Indonesian Unity Party (PKPI), and the National Democrats Party (Nasdem) established by Surya Paloh, the owner of Metro TV and the Media Indonesia newspaper. The ruling Democrat Party has taken a neutral stance in the election, although some of its top cadres have chosen to take sides. (*)
