Surabaya (Antara) - The Surabaya local administration will soon provide some job opportunities for residents affected by the closure of the infamous Dolly red-light district which was officially closed on Wednesday (June, 18) evening. Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, known as Risma, Thursday, admitted that for rehabilitating the prostitution areas into a clean and safe area would take a process, such as in Sememi and Klakahrejo, ex-red light districts, which now in under going development. "Actually, the declaration of the closure the red-light districts has been carried out by the local government since the end of the last year, however no one thing could be done instantly," Risma said. She is optimistist that the changing of the ex-prostitution area would take benefit significvantly, besides it becomes safe dan peace area, it would also impact for the sharply increasing of the land's price, such as in Dupak Bangunsari, another ex-red light district in Surabaya. Surabaya Mayor hopes the Dolly's former sex workers and pimps as well as the residents whose livelihoods impacted by the closure of the red-light area would change it with another promising ones. To overcome the impact of the closure, the Social Affairs Ministry has allocated Rp7.3 billion and Rp1.5 billion from the East Java Provincial Government to be disbursed to sex workers and pimps, with each individual receiving Rp5 million, she said. In the first step, she said, the Surabaya local administration has symbolically realized a job contract for as many as 97 people whose livelihoods have been dependent on the Dolly red-light district for decades. They are mostlty sidewalk vendors, pedicab drivers, washerwomen and middlemen who get benefit from the prostitution business. "However, some of them have signed job contracts for recruiting in the local administration board for the unity and protetion of the nation (Bakesbanglinmas), Communication and Information Services (Diskominfo), and some local government's hospitals," she said.
