Jakarta (Antara) - The National Demographic and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) said Indonesia's annual population growth may have increased to 1.52 percent from 1.49 percent. "I heard that it has increased to 1.52 percent but we still have to check it," BKKBN Chief Fasli Jalal said here on Tuesday. He said the agency would ask for clarification from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) about the population growth. "I cannot yet confirm the truth of the information because we still have to await confirmation from the BPS," he said. But if the information turned out to be true, this meant that the target of keeping down the country's population growth rate would be far from expectation, he said. "We have set ourselves the target of lowering the annual population growth rate to 1.27 percent by the end of 2014. But if the growth increases to 1.52 percent it will be far from the target," he said. Fasli said the BKKBN would keep intensifying family planning campaigns to all layers of the Indonesian community. "The public must know that uncontrollable population growth may have an adverse impact on the availability of land (for housing), the creation of job opportunities and the supply of energy," he said.
