Manila (Antara/Xinhua-OANA) - The death toll resulting from supertyphoon "Haiyan" released by local authorities kept growing, though the official tally on the death toll still stood at 138.
Local television ABS-CBN News quoted the estimates of Tecson John Lim, administrator of Tacloban City as saying the number of fatalities stood at 500.
Tacloban city is considered the worst hit area in central Philippine province of Leyte when typhoon "Haiyan," locally known as "Yolanda" hit the Philippines.
Some bodies were reportedly seen floating in floods at the height of typhoon Yolanda's onslaught in Tacloban City on Friday.
Citing an official from the Philippines Red Cross, local media inquirer said the strongest typhoon of this year is believed to have killed 1,200 people in the Philippines.
The Philippine government found it difficult to collate information on typhoon's effects because of disrupted telecommunication services.
President Benigno Aquino III has ordered all government agencies concerned to intensify search-and-rescue operations and make sure aid reaches people affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda ( Haiyan).
Secretary of Interior and Local Government Manuel Roxas II has gone to Tacloban city in Leyte and has been keeping President Aquino updated on situation there.(*)
