Pontianak, West Kalimantan (Antara) - The Center for Orangutan Protection (COP) has called on police to arrest those causing the deaths of orangutans. "The forestry ministry and police must not hesitate to hold responsible those causing orangutan deaths. The campaign for the protection of orangutans is not enough. Prison is the best classroom for killers of orangutans," Hardi Baktiantoro, the COP principal, said here on Wednesday. He cited law enforcement officials in East Kalimantan as an example, where police arrested eight people for killing orangutans in 2012. "It's an effective shock therapy. Now the people of East Kalimantan have chosen to avoid harming orangutans and call authorities if they have a problem with orangutans," he said. A male orangutan died in Peniraman village, Pontianak District, West Kalimantan Province, on Tuesday (Oct 22) after being captured by local villagers. The villagers said the orangutan fell from a tree as they were chasing it. Head of the West Kalimantan Natural Resource Conservation Agency (KKSDA), Siti Chadidjah Kaniawati, however, said that the orangutan died from repeatedly being struck. Based on an autopsy on the orangutan, the animal was healthy, but there were some traumatic injuries to his skull and other parts of its body, she said. She added that the animal was wounded by sharp and blunt objects when he was being chased. There was also a sign that he had been engaged in a conflict with humans. During the autopsy, an air gun bullet was found in his body. "The air gun bullet was in an old wound which was in the process of healing," she said. (*)
