Jakarta (Antara) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted southwestern Kaur District, Bengkulu Province, on Saturday evening.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on its web site that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 4.94 degrees southern latitude and 102.94 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 17 km.
Officials said the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Geologically, Indonesia is located in an unstable region called 'The Ring of Fire', a zone noted for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that encircles the basin of the Pacific Ocean. (*)
