Jakarta (Antara) - The Indonesia Council of Ulemas (MUI) has expressed its firm rejection to the holding of Miss World beauty contest in the country. "After closely observing and studying carefully regarding those who are against and in favor of the Miss World 2013 in Indonesia, MUI hereby states its rejection to it," MUI's head of foreign affairs, Muhyiddin Junaidi, said here on Friday. One of the considerations to reject the event is Surah Al Ahzab 50 of the Quran that orders women to wear veils. "There are also various hadiths that state that all parts of the women's body must be covered except hands and face," he said. He said the Miss World event is also against the spirit of the country's constitution especially Article 32 that states that the state advances Indonesia's national culture in the midst of world civilizations by assuring people's freedom in maintaining and developing cultural values. "The Miss World is not in line with the Indonesian culture. The contest also impresses insult to women and national culture through its exhibition of body parts," he said. He said under Islamic teachings exhibiting parts of female body and body's movement during walking is a sin. He said MUI also views that the event tends to demonstrate wealth and glamor which is against current economic conditions of the people in the country. MUI supports the government's efforts in advancing national culture to make it a means of improving people's economic welfare," he said. Muhyiddin said MUI is obligated to safeguard the nation's morality and therefore is against the holding of events like that in the country. "We do not reject global culture but people must be protected against hedonistic global culture," he said. Indonesia is scheduled to host the Miss World 2013 on September 4-6 in Jakarta and Bali. The MNC as the organizer meanwhile has said that no bikini session would be held in the world's beauty contest. Despite the statement MUI however remains rejecting the event. (*)
