Lumajang, E Java (Antara) - The Semeru-Tengger-Bromo National Park Monitoring Agency (TNBTS) has stated that it will reopen Mount Semeru's climbing track on Friday after being closed for several months due to a landslide and bad weather. "We will reopen the climbing track on Friday formally for the public after being closed for several months," said Head of TNBTS Ayu Dewi Utari here on Thursday. She said the TNBTS officers have surveyed and cleaned the climbing track from fallen trees and avalanche which covered the path several weeks ago. The officers assured that the climbing track from Ranu Pani to Kalimati points is secure for climbers. "The track in the 3,676 meters high mount is safe for hikers and we have decided to reopen it," Ayu said. Ayu admitted that the agency got several phone calls from hundreds of climbers who asked about the opening of the climbing tracks. "We are recommending that climbers should only reach the Kalimati peak. We prohibit them from climbing to the peak of Semeru (Mahameru) as it is dangerous for them," Ayu said. The TNBTS in opening the climbing track for the public will also coordinate with the Geology and Volcanology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG). "The PVMBG limits the climbing track to Kalimati only as the status of the mount is still in alert II level. Local residents are still advised to not carry out activities in a radius of four kilometers from the Mahameru peak," Ayu said. "We urged climbers to obey the TNBTS recommendation. They should also prepare their physical conditions before climbing Mount Semeru," Ayu said. Ayu said the climbing route in Mount Semeru consisted of several posts, including the Ranu Pani - Watu Rejeng - Ranu Kumbolo - Oro-oro Ombo - Cemoro Kandang - Jambangan - Sumbermani - Kalimati - Arcopodo - Cemoro Tunggal - and Mahameru.
