Kuta, Bali - The New Year Eve celebrations this year year would be marked by car-free night in many parts in the country.
Kuta, the popular tourist resort in Bali, would implement the non-car zone as of 4pm for the celebration, the deputy chief of Bali regional police command, Brigadier General Ketut Untung Yoga Ana, said here on Monday.
Kuta would be flooded by tourists from across the country for the New Year celebration. A lot of cars with a plate number from outside Bali had been seen parked in the Kuta area since Monday morning making the police have to work hard to clear the area for the car-free night.
Led by Jakarta, which will also close the Sudirman-Thamrin main street from 8pm to 2pm, other cities would also carry out the program such as Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, Medan and others, for the celebrations.
State-owned oil company Pertamina official in Pekanbaru, Riau province, Sumatra, Sonny Mirath, hailed the program saying it could potentially and substantially save the use of subsidized gasoline.
Due to increasing consumption of subsidized oil fuels the government has been forced to increase the quota this year. (*)
