East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa confirmed the province's readiness to achieve national sugar self-sufficiency by accelerating the downstreaming of sugarcane plantations.
In a statement received in Surabaya on Wednesday, Khofifah said that all district heads across East Java have already mapped potential land areas for expansion, emphasizing that cross-regional synergy is key to land expansion and accelerated plantation investment.
It was agreed that East Java will plant sugarcane on 70,000 hectares of the 100,000-hectare total national target.
"East Java's Additional Planted Area (LTT) for rice is the highest at 1.8 million hectares. Since rice self-sufficiency has been achieved, the figure must not decrease in 2026. Therefore, allocations like this must be carefully mapped out," she said.
Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman has set a 90-day deadline for ratoon removal—the process of replacing harvested sugarcane with new shoots—across all districts and cities in East Java.
To support this, Khofifah established a coordination center at the Grahadi State Building to expedite program implementation.
Beyond the sugar sector, East Java will also be the first province to establish state-owned Grand Parent Stock (GPS) production. This involves the first generation of poultry parent stock used to produce Final Stock (FS) or Day-Old Chick (DOC) seeds for commercial production.
“We are also discussing and coordinating with several district heads regarding the National Milk Production Program (PSN) to ensure that we can secure pregnant heifers. The programs are aligned closely with East Java’s livestock farming culture,” she added.
Khofifah hopes that this synergy between the central, provincial, and district/city governments will drive regional economic growth while improving the welfare of plantation owners, livestock breeders, and farmers in the province.
