New Delhi (ANTARA/RIA Novosti-OANA) - At least 143 people, including 78 police, were injured in central New Delhi, on Sunday at protests in support of a gang-rape victim, police said.
The protesters took to the streets in the capital seeking justice for the 23-year-old woman who was allegedly raped by six men in a bus last week.
All the six accused have been arrested. The victim is in a critical state.
Indian authorities have banned protests in the city. The measure did not stop however thousands of people on Sunday from clashing with police who fired tear gas and water cannons.
The Indian government said it set up commission to investigate the incident and pledged stronger punishment for sexual assault crimes. (*)
