Yogyakarta, (Antara) - More than two million Indonesian people choose to migrate out of the country, rather than follow the transmigration program offered by the government, according to an observer.

"Many Indonesian people who  choose to migrate abroad, which means that the transmigration program offered by the government is certainly not very popular,"  a senior observer at the Centre for Population Studies and Policies (PSKK) at Gajah Mada University, Sukamdi, remarked here on Sunday.

He said the reason why many Indonesians migrate abroad is to improve their welfare, especially their incomes.

"To migrate out of the country is considered more prospective than following the transmigration program, because there is an offer of more promising income," he noted.

According to Sukamdi, it is not easy to encourage the Indonesian people to follow the transmigration program, because many of them prefer to become migrant workers abroad, such as in Malaysia, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, as well as other destination countries in East Asia and Europe.

Based on data on the placement of Indonesian workers 2011-2015, issued by the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers (BNP2TKI), as many as 2,299,187 Indonesians work abroad.

"The number could be even more, given the many migrant workers who did not have official documents and went through the lines of illegal departures," he noted.(*)
