Magelang, Central Java (Antara) - Waisak, the holiest day on the Buddhist calendar, can be a source of inspiration for the people of Indonesia to lead a more spiritual and fruitful life, Vice President Boediono stated here on Wednesday night.
"The universal values discovered and preached by Buddha can inspire the people to build a progressive and prosperous nation," the vice president remarked during the Waisak day celebrations at the Borobudur temple.
Waisak is celebrated across the Buddhist world, but the celebration is the grandest at Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular sites.
Waisak marks Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and attainment of nirvana.
As a mark of celebration, a grand procession is held by saffron-robed monks who walk around 3 kilometers from Mendut to Pawon and then Borobudur.
The crowds congregate at Borobudur and, as the full moon emerges, candles are lit and flowers strewn about as offerings, followed by reciting of prays and chanting.
Boediono noted that people from all strata of life need to constantly strive to work hard and make sacrifices in order to develop a progressive and prosperous nation.
"In this pluralist society, efforts to build this nation should be based on the spirit of tolerance and brotherly love," the vice president emphasized.(*)
