Sumenep, E Java, - The Trunojoyo Airport in Sumenep district on Madura island, East Java, will soon have a navigation instrument with very-high frequency omnidirectional range (VOR), according to a senior official from the airport. "The instrument, expected to be installed on December 31 this year at the latest, will serve as a signpost and will also help determine the distance between an aircraft and the airport," Trunojoyo Working Unit Chief Dwi Ariyanto said here on Monday. "The Trunojoyo Airport Working Unit operates under the Ministry of Transportation's Air Transportation Directorate," he noted. "The procurement of the navigation instrument, under the Transportation Ministry's airport development program, is expected to be installed by a third party by December 31," Ariyanto added. He said the instrument would be installed at the location decided by a team from Air Navigation Directorate and Transportation Ministry. "The team had earlier surveyed the Trunojoyo airport to determine the most suitable point for the installation of the navigation instrument," Ariyanto continued. "The area where the instrument will be placed is currently the asset of Sumenep district government. However, after the installation, it will become Trunojoyo airport's," he pointed out. "The Air Transportation Directorate and the Sumenep district government are jointly developing the Trunojoyo airport. Therefore, we want to install the navigation instrument there," Ariyanto explained. He added that the Sumenep district government and the airport working group had made efforts for several years to develop Trunojoyo airport into a commercial aerodrome with regular flights. (*)
