Jakarta - Indonesian neurologist Andreas Harry highlighted the benefits of tofu and tempe (fermented soybean cake) at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) in Vancouver, Canada, held from July 14-19. "During the congress, I said the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease in Indonesia was much less because most of its people traditionally preferred eating tofu and tempe," Andreas told ANTARA by phone from Vancouver on Friday. He said the AAIC drew more than 4,300 members of the Alzheimer's scientific community to Vancouver to share the latest ideas and theories in the field. Groundbreaking studies captured global media attention as the world's leading experts explored innovative ways to further Alzheimer's research. Andreas said his statement on tofu and tempe received positive response from other participants in the conference. According to an AAIC press release, new studies reported at the event covered the entire spectrum of Alzheimer's disease and dementia research, including causes, risk factors, detection and diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. AAIC is the premier annual forum for presentation and discussion of the latest Alzheimer's and dementia research. The 2012 conference featured approximately 2,500 scientific presentations. "The good news is that we are making advances towards earlier detection of Alzheimer's, with greater knowledge of dementia risk factors, and better treatments and prevention," Alzheimer's Association Chief Medical and Scientific Officer William Thies said. "These advances are critical to create a future where Alzheimer's disease is no longer a death sentence but a manageable, treatable, curable, or preventable disease," he added. The soaring costs of Alzheimer's and dementia care, the rising number of people living with the disease, and the challenges encountered by affected families call for a meaningful, aggressive and ambitious global effort to win the fight against this dreaded disease.(*)
