Ternate, North Maluku - An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit the North Maluku provincial city of Ternate and its surrounding areas on Friday at 5.17 Eastern Indonesia Standard time (WIT), the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said.
There was no immediate report about casualty and material losses, a staff of the city Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Helmi said here on Friday.
The quake was centred about 80 kilometers of northwest of Ternate at the depth of 16 kilometers, the agency noted.
On Thursday (June 7), a tremor measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale also hit West Halmahera, North Maluku province, at 10.30 am local time.
According to data from Papua province`s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the quake was centred 109 kilometres northwest of West Halmahera at a depth of 10 kilometres.(*)
