The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will work to support the government's primary food security target through Info BMKG, its globally-recognized weather information application.

"Based on the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Info BMKG (in 2021) was the number one (in the category of weather information apps for sectoral users), while the second best was Germany's (app)," BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said here on Tuesday.

She made the remarks while delivering a report during a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR).

Karnawati said that the WMO conducted an assessment of weather monitoring applications from around the world. In 2021, the WMO announced Info BMKG as the best application in the category of weather information apps for sectoral or specialized users.

The Info BMKG app has so far been downloaded by more than five million users on the Play Store.

The app does not just provide complex information on weather, but also serves as a digital system and planting calendar for farmers. It also provides weather information to support transportation services, such as shipping and flights.

During the meeting with Commission V, Karnawati conveyed BMKG's commitment to support the Prabowo Subianto government's Asta Cita or eight main programs, especially in the food, water, and energy security sectors.

According to her, food security is closely linked to climate and weather, which are currently being affected by global climate change.

In response to climate change, the BMKG has prepared several initiatives to support farmers and the agricultural sector. One of them is providing accurate and timely weather information.

In addition, BMKG is supporting two other strategic programs, namely transportation safety and environmental protection.

Karnawati said that transportation safety is important for maintaining cross-regional connectivity.
