Jakarta - The Indonesian rupiah weakened 50 points against the US dollar on Thursday morning as concerns are growing about prospects of the Greek debt restructuring talks with investors.
The rupiah traded at Rp1,150 per dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Thursday morning compared to Rp9,100 per dollar the day before.
"Uncertainties surrounding the Greek debt restructuring have eroded investors' enthusiasm for risky currencies including the rupiah," money market observer Rully Nova of Bank Himpunan Saudara said, here on Thursday.
The prospects of the rupiah's exchange rate against the dollar would still depend on the results of the Greek debt swap, he said adding that if the results were negative they would affect the rupiah.
Meanwhile, money market observer Ariston Tjendra of Monex Investindo Futures said that the US private sector's job growth rate in February 2012, which was higher than economists had expected, had added to the US dollar's attracting power.
"Since early March, the US dollar has been strengthening against global major currencies," he said. (*)
