Chairman of the joint independent fact-finding team (TGIPF) investigating the Kanjuruhan stampede, Mahfud MD, has said that there is a possibility of more suspects being named in connection with the incident, which claimed 132 lives.
"The possibility is very open, depending on the police. And the public has talked a lot about who should be suspected as a new suspect. It is on television and newspaper every day," Mahfud remarked at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday.
Nevertheless, under the examination procedure that is currently being carried out by the police, the determination of the suspects must be in accordance with the law, he emphasized.
Mahfud and 13 members of the TGIPF submitted a report on the results of their investigation directly to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Friday.
According to him, with the submission of the report, the TGIPF has completed its duties according to the President's direction.
He said he believes that the police have a better understanding regarding identifying new suspects in the Kanjuruhan case.
"We have written in the thick report, but we know that the police know better how to look for it because the police have procedural law weapons," Mahfud added.
The TGIPF’s report has concluded that the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) must be held responsible, morally and legally, for the stampede at the stadium, he informed.
"They must be responsible for a very horrific death and negligence that killed 132 people," Mahfud said.
President Widodo has ordered that the investigation into the Kanjuruhan tragedy be completed, he added. National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has also been asked to conduct further investigation.
"The fact-finding team had suggested some people to be more responsible for this. The police have been recommended and encouraged by the President to continue the investigation," he informed.
Earlier, Prabowo had named six suspects in connection with the Kanjuruhan tragedy. They included three civilian suspects: LIB (PT Liga Indonesia Baru) president director Ahmad Hadian Lukita; chairman of the Arema Malang executive committee, Abdul Haris; and security officer steward Suko Sutrisno
Meanwhile, there were three suspects from the police: the operation head of Malang Police, Commissioner Wahyu Setyo Pranoto; head of the on-alert-police unit of Malang Police, Adjunct Commissioner Bambang Sidik Achmadi; and company command of the East Java Police Mobile Brigade, Adjunct Commissioner Hasdarman.
