Surabaya (Antaranews Jatim) - Youngsters from the St. Michael Catholic Church on Tanjung Sadari Street, Surabaya, presented a drama on the "Visualization of the Way of the Cross" to illustrate the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for his people.

"The sacrifice made by Jesus depicted through this visualization demonstrates that he won over sin with his love," Fr. Parish of the Saint Michael Catholic Church of Surabaya Ferdinandus Alfonsus Maria noted here on Friday.

The play was performed colossally by the youngsters of the Catholic Church of St Michael of Surabaya to showcase how Jesus faced court trials several times under Jewish religious leaders and the Roman Empire in around the 1st century AD.

Under the Jewish Court, Jesus was believed to have committed a religious offense by claiming to be the son of God. However, the Jewish court, under the Roman Empire, had no right to impose death penalty.

Hence, the Jewish religious leaders handed this case to the Roman court, so that the death penalty could be executed.

During the court proceedings, Jesus was tortured by both religious and Roman Empire soldiers.

Jesus was finally crucified until death.

Father Ferdinandus noted that the enactment of the play of the cross had been routinely performed every year at the courtyard of the Catholic Church of St Michael, Surabaya, to celebrate Easter Day.

"This drama depicts that Jesus had defeated all forces that could ruin human life by sacrificing himself. Jesus did not involve others in his punishment during the trial, but he gave himself peacefully," he stated.(*)
