Jakarta, (Antara) - Researchers and scientists from 15 countries, as members of the International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO), will support the sustainable forest management scheme in Indonesia to optimally boost economic growth and community welfare.
Head of Research, Development, and Innovation of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Henry Bastaman said that a plantation forest management approach was required for balancing the productivity and sustainability of forests.
"Forest management must balance new demands, growth, and needs of the traditional community," he noted in a written statement received by Antara on Monday.
To this end, the ministry is currently intensifying the development of bioenergy plantations in peatlands, so as to also support the restoration of the peat ecosystem.
At the International Conference of Indonesian Forestry Researchers held by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Yogyakarta on July 24-27, researchers agreed on undertaking several efforts, including controlling the exploitation of plantation forests and promoting sustainable management, promoting the development of the local economy through the sustainability of plantations, encouraging local leadership and decentralizing forest governance at the community level, as well as encouraging sustainable support from government agencies and local communities.
Themed "Promoting Sustainable Resources from Plantations Forest for Economic Growth and Community Benefits," the conference facilitates the researchers to deliver scientific presentations and learn firsthand the historical evidence and ecosystem restoration efforts being undertaken at the Mount Merapi National Park.
Some participants at the conference also gained information about planting endemic plantations in the national park as a real effort to restore the land affected by the Merapi eruption in 2010.
Some cooperation agreements were also signed between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Bangka Belitung provincial government, Gadjah Mada University, Mulawarman University, and Muhammadiyah University of Palangka Raya.(*)
