Jakarta, (Antara) - The Indonesian government is fighting for the interest of small-scale fishermen at the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting on fisheries subsidies, as quoted in a press statement from Indonesian Permanent Representative in Geneva received here on Friday.

In the meeting, Indonesian delegation stated that the practices of illegal, unreported and undocumented (IUU) fishing are economically and socially detrimental for the fishermen's interest.

To that end, Indonesian government considers the establishment of rules on the provision of fisheries subsidies in the WTO as a powerful weapon to eradicate IUU fishing.

The government also believes that the interest of fishermen and small-scale fisheries must be part of consideration to formulate the regulation.

The WTO negotiation group (NGR) meeting in Geneva from June 14 to 16, 2017, specifically deals with the drafts proposed by Indonesia and some Latin American countries.

Indonesia's proposal, which has been submitted formally on June 6, includes the prohibition of subsidies that contribute to IUU fishing, overfishing, and overcapacity.

Indonesia also emphasized the importance of providing flexibility or special and differential support to small-scale fishermen and small-scale fisheries processors.

Based on data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, there are approximately 868 thousand fishery business households that still need support from the government.

Carrying out marine fishery resource utilization activities as a driver of sustainable economic activity should not only be done by one country but must require global cooperation.

Indonesian government considers multilateral forums, including one with the WTO, as appropriate measures to achieve such goal.(*)
