Jakarta, (Antara) - US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan held a meeting with Coordinating Minister for Political, Security, and Legal Affairs Wiranto on Monday to discuss steps to address the issue of terrorism.

"We discussed about terrorism and radicalism. (The ambassador) said that, similar to Indonesia, the US was really concerned about such issues," Wiranto noted.

According to Wiranto, the US lauds the efforts being undertaken by Indonesia to counter terrorism.

Hence, the US government is eager to cooperate with Indonesia in sharing knowledge and experiences on the fight against such multinational crimes.

Wiranto and Donovan also spoke about the situation of national security, particularly dealing with the regional elections and the development of Islam in Indonesia.

The US government lauded religious tolerance that has existed since long in the country, Wiranto said.

Over the past decade, the relations between Indonesia and the US have become more intense after former US president Barack Obama visited Indonesia in 2010 to forge cooperation in several fields.

In 2015, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had paid a reciprocal visit to Washington to ink deals on strategic cooperation, including in the fields of defense and security.

In the future, US Vice President Mike Pence is planning to undertake a working visit to Indonesia and meet President Jokowi.

"With the new administration, led by President Donald Trump, we expect this progressive cooperation to be continued in future. I think the US ambassador also agrees that the strong relations must be further intensified after the change in government," Wiranto emphasized.(*)
