Jakarta, (Antara) - Electronic media across the country should not disseminate false news that could disunite people, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said.

"The news should educate and enlighten people," Panjaitan said in a press statement here on Thursday.

The statement was delivered by Panjaitan during an annual meeting of Broadcasting Regulatory Authorities Forum of The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Bandung on Wednesday (Feb 22).

The meeting raised the subject of digitalization and convergence of media.

The minister welcomed the conference, as it could demonstrate Indonesia's role in maintaining harmony.

"The forum is expected to demonstrate Indonesia's role in maintaining harmony through broadcast media outlets," the minister stated.

The senior minister pointed out that broadcast media has a role in bringing harmony to the country.

The conference was attended by delegations of 46 countries, including Turkey, Morocco, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, and Australia.

Each delegation shared experiences from other countries on setting up new media in the media convergence.

The ceremony was also attended by Communications and Informatics Minister Rudiantara, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, Mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil, and Rector of Padjadjaran University Med Tri Hanggada.

Chairman of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) Yuliandre Darwish revealed that the annual meeting would discuss the contribution of the Broadcasting Regulatory Authorities of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

"We also exchange information on the trend of broadcasting," Darwish stated.(*)
