Bandung, W Java, (Antara) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries will, in stages, conduct verification, data collection, and certification of the 111 outer islands in Indonesia as one of the priority programs in 2017.

"We have outlined several priority tasks this year, as we will verify and record the 111 outer islands in the Indonesian territory. If an outer island is owned by a person or party, we will then check and handle the matter," Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti stated while giving a public lecture in the West hall of the Bandung Institute of Technology on Friday.

She said the verification of the outer islands is part of the efforts to avoid foreigners or entities from taking over any Indonesian island.

"Imagine how rich Indonesia is. (Indonesia has many islands with a variety of natural resources). Hence, we should keep them all together," she told the students.

In her lecture themed "Priority Development of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia," Pudjiastuti said the ministry had begun several trainings related to the vision and mission of the Indonesian government.

"President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) wants the sea to become the future and mainstay sector for Indonesia, and the president wants Indonesia to become the pivot of the maritime world. It is easy to proclaim these two things, but it is hard to achieve," she stressed.

Moreover, she added, Indonesia's marine wealth should also be a source of the people's livelihood, which is fully managed by all Indonesians.

Despite being endowed with abundant marine resources, the census of 2003-2013 claimed one in three Indonesian children had stunted growth due to a lack of nutrients, such as animal protein.

"We should solve the problem by laying emphasis on meeting the protein requirements of the nation's children, as the next generation will determine the fate of the country. We need to prepare them to have high stamina and capacity to compete," she noted.(*)
