Jakarta, (Antara) - The Indonesian government has committed to intensifying the capacity building program to support democratic transformation in Myanmar.

"Indonesia supported Myanmar to become a member of the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN), and now, we are thankful to Indonesia for its assistance for our democratic transformation," Myanmar Ambassador to Indonesia Aung Htoo stated during a reception to mark Myanmar's National Day here on Wednesday night.

Ambassador Htoo also praised Indonesia's support in enhancing interfaith dialogue in Myanmar and lauded the values of tolerance followed in the country.

Indonesia and Myanmar also agreed to increase cooperation in combating illicit drug trafficking and ensuring inclusive development through good governance.

"Myanmar and Indonesia have been enjoying growing and sustainable relations for more than 70 years, and we are committed to strengthening our cooperation," Htoo noted.

With regard to the ongoing crisis in southern Rakhine State, where Rohingya Muslims were being reportedly abused by Myanmar's Military, Indonesia stands by the Myanmar government's side to resolve the problem peacefully.

On December 6, President Widodo had instructed Foreign Affairs Minister Marsudi to visit Myanmar and deliver four messages related to the Rakhine crisis: the urgency of delivering humanitarian assistance to the state, the importance of establishing stability and peace, protecting and enforcing human rights, and reaching out more to the ASEAN for resolving the crisis.

"We want to express our gratitude to Indonesia for helping us during the crisis and also for your (Indonesian government's) commitment to help us in resolving the crisis," Htoo said.

Currently, the Myanmar government has welcomed ASEAN's humanitarian assistance to Rakhine, including from Indonesia.

Earlier on December 29, Indonesia's President Joko Widodo had dispatched 10 containers of humanitarian packages containing logistics aid from the Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta for the Rohingya people.(*)
