Yogyakarta, (Antara) - Indonesia suffered Rp205 trillion in losses due to graft cases between 2001 and 2015, a British historian said.

"Of the total, only 13 percent or Rp22 trillion has been regained through court processes,"  Peter Carey said in an International Conference on Southeast Asia Studies (ICSEAS) here on Friday.

The Rp183 trillion in  losses is equal to the entire budget for the development of 871-km toll roads and new roads, he said.

Most of the graft cases involved civil servants and corporations, he said.

One of the steps to curb corruption cases is eradicating corruption permissive mental at bureaucracy, companies and in the public.

Indonesia is now facing what Britain did in the 18th century, he said.

"When a government is facing corrupt state institutions, it must try to create an effective government by conducting modern administration to avoid corruption practices," he said.(*)
