Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - The Surabaya city authorities on Tuesday inspected several places employing expatriates to check if they meet immigration and manpower documents.
During the inspection, a team of officers from the Surabaya city government, the immigration office, the military, the police and the public prosecutor's office also checked whether the expatriates were holding posts in keeping with their employment permits, head of the National Vigilance Section of the Surabaya Unity and Community Protection Agency (Bakesbanglinmas), Achmad Mardjuki, said.
"The step was taken to ensure that expatriates were not abusing the law in holding these posts. In their expatriate employment permit, they may be shown as holding the post of a director while, in fact, they are employed just as a shop keeper. This would be in violation of the regulation," he said.
The first place they inspected was a medical therapy site on the Kapas Krampung Street, which employed two Koreans.
The officers later checked the documents of the two Koreans, including passports, expatriate employment permits, permits of limited stay, and a written statement of domicile.
Meanwhile, Head of Bakesbanglinmas in Surabaya, Soemarno, said the raid was aimed at ensuring that all foreign nationals employed in the city meet the requirements of legal documents.
"We only want to ensure that the activities of the expatriates in Surabaya were as per the existing rules," he said.
If they meet all requirements, their stay in the city is guaranteed, he said. (*)
