Bantul, Yogyakarta (Antara) - Some 450 elementary school students in Bantul District, Yogyakarta, demonstrated handwashing with soap on Tuesday to promote a clean and healthy lifestyle.

"The demonstration of handwashing with soap aims to instill a clean and healthy lifestyle among the elementary school students in Bantul and elsewhere," Erwin Dwi Sasongko, the Gajah Mada University (UGM) students salience public relations official for field study program, stated here on Tuesday.

He remarked that the students from 30 elementary schools participated in the handwashing activity in commemoration of National Children's Day 2015.

Sasongko stated that in addition to promoting a clean and healthy lifestyle, the handwashing demonstration at the elementary schools in Bantul was also intended to raise awareness among the children and public regarding the importance of this easiest, cheapest, and effective way to prevent several health problems caused by germs.

According to Sasongko, handwashing is one simple step that the children and public can take to protect themselves against infectious diseases.

"Through this handwashing activity, we want to give recommendations to the government to improve the facilities and infrastructure at schools in its efforts to promote a clean and healthy lifestyle," he affirmed.

He expressed hope that following a clean and healthy lifestyle at the elementary schools in Bantul would help to boost the image and performance of the government in the field of education, as well as serve as a pilot project for other schools in the regions.  (*)
