Jakarta (Antara) - The government, through the Directorate General of Correctional Institute of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has granted special Christmas sentence remissions to 9,068 prisoners across the country, a senior official stated. "Of the number, 98 inmates who are eligible under the Special Remission II category can directly walk free," Director General of the Correctional Institute Handoyo Sudrajat stated in a press release here on Thursday. He said that special remissions were granted to 9,068 Christian inmates who came from all penitentiaries across the country. The granting of sentence remissions is based on Presidential Decree No. 175/1999 on Remission and Government Regulation (PP) No. 99/2012 on the second amendment of PP No. 32/1999 on the procedures of implementing the rights of inmates. The director general stated that the sentence remissions were awarded to offer motivation and to raise awareness among inmates about maintaining good conduct while serving their jail terms. Based on available official data until December 24, 2014, there are 162,218 prisoners and detainees in Indonesia, comprising 110,411 inmates and 51,807 detainees. (*)
