Surabaya, E Java (Antara) - Hundreds of people staged a rally outside the Surabaya City Legislative Council (DPRD) on Friday rejecting the law on indirect regional head elections. "Don't kill democracy which has been running well," demonstrator Radi said in his oration. He said the law on indirect regional head elections reduced the people's aspirations. In the midst of democratic regime, the people who should directly elect their leaders were no longer free to decide their own choice. "The people have been robbed of their political rights to elect regional heads directly in the past nine years," he said. In its plenary session early on Friday (Sept 26), the House of Representatives (DPR) endorsed the bill on regional head election into law. The bill stipulates that regional heads would be elected by the Regional Legislative Assemblies (DPRD) and not by the people directly. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono himself had issued two government regulations in lieu of law (Perppus) on the regional head election on Thursday evening to stop the implementation of the bill on regional elections that the Parliament had passed into law last week. He issued the Perppus following widespread objection to the bill. The bill changed the direct election of provincial governors, district heads and city mayors by the people into an indirect one by the Regional Legislative Assemblies. (*)
