By Abdul Hakim Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has officially inaugurated a monument of "Suro" (shark) and "Boyo" (crocodile) known as the city's icon at the Busan Indonesian Center, South Korea. The monument was jointly inaugurated by Tri Rismaharini and her Busan counterpart Hur Nam Sik to mark the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship, Head of the Surabaya Culture and Tourism Office Wiwiek Widayati said here on Tuesday. "The Suro dan Boyo Monument which is now put on display in Busan is the work of the local artist of the Heroes City, Agung Tato," she said. The bronze statue which is 2.6 meters high has a diameter of 0.75 meters. The series of the vertical statue is placed on the coasters with a diameter of 3 meters. "The entire process of working on the statue was carried out in Surabaya. After being completed, the statue was shipped to Busan," she said. Meanwhile, head of the Surabaya Administrative Cooperation Section Ifron Hady Susanto said that both cities have mutually benefited from the sister city relationship they established in 1994. There are many areas of cooperation which have been realized, including culture, education, economics and fashion. "Both Surabaya and Busan have routinely sent arts troupes to each other. Busan always takes part in the Cross Culture Festival (CCF) held by the Surabaya City Administration every year. Likewise, Surabaya also sends a number of artists to participate in a similar event called the Global Gathering in South Korea," he said. In addition to the education sector, the city administration also has sent a number of teachers to learn in Busan. Last year, the city government sent a total of 40 teachers and principals to conduct comparative studies at different schools in Busan, Ifron said. This year, about 70 teachers departed for Busan to conduct similar mission. Hopefully, there will be a transfer of knowledge which may help improve the quality of education among teachers in Surabaya, he said. (*)
