Jakarta (Antara) - The ruling Democrat Party ended a leadership meeting here on Sunday without a final decision with regard to the presidential election on July 9. President Yudhoyono as the party's general chairman said after the meeting that the definitive stance would be taken on May 20 at the latest. "The leadership meeting however has a view that it would be greater and more respectful for the party to take an independent stance and not to beg for power from any side," he said reading the results of the meeting at a press conference. He said the Democrat Party would let existing presidential candidates and their supporting parties to compete well and give education to the people. "Let the people choose the one they think the best to become a president for the next five years," he said. Yudhoyono said the Democrat Party meanwhile has been determined to and would focus on developing the party in the next five years' time seriously and sustainably to make it more modern, professional and dedicated to the people's interests. "If the Democrat Party is not in the government for the next five years we will even be grateful as we could seriously improve the party and cadres while at the same time listening to productive criticisms," he said.
