Jakarta (Antara) - Woman Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Amalia Sari Gumeral has called for heaviest punishment for perpetrators of child sexual violence to create deterrent effect.
"I hope that the heaviest punishment should be meted out for the perpetrators of child sexual abuses," Linda said after attending a campaign on anti-violence against children in Jalan Thamrin, Central Jakarta, here on Sunday.
She said that the punishment given to the perpetrators of violence so far was too lenient. "The punishment is too lenient and it does not have any deterrent effects so that the same cases continue to be repeated."
The minister expressed her hope that the punishment for sexual violence would be increased in the amend of the book on criminal procedures (KUHAP).
"The punishment for sexual crime on children by adults should be increased to a minimum 20 years in jail and a maximum of life sentence," she said.
Linda said the imposition of heavy punishment on child sexual abusers is expected to minimize the repetition of the same cases in the future.
On the occasion, Linda expressed her concern over the sexual abuse case against a kindergarten student at the Jakarta International School (JIS).
"I strongly condemn the incident which should never be tolerated. I call on law enforcers to comprehensively disclose the case in the bud so that it will create deterrent effects," she said. (*)
