Jakarta (Antara) - Indonesia's future leaders are required to have an impressive plan to eliminate inequality, a sociologist at National University (Unas), Nia Elvina, stated here on Friday. "The future leaders must have a grand design to eliminate social, economic, and political inequality in favor of the lower class community of farmers and fishermen," Nia noted. With rampant flooding and landslide disasters that have caused harvest failure, she noted that the future leaders should reconsider the development strategy in the country. According to her, the development which was in favor of the great financiers and the upper class community has only created greater social, economic, and political inequality. She noted that the license granted to the financiers to exploit the forest in a large scale had resulted the in harvest failure for the farmers. "On one side the financiers who have the license to exploit the forest profit greatly but on the other side of the coin, it is the lower class community, such as farmers, who bear the consequences of their greed," Nia pointed out. On yet another occasion, one of the members of a group of rural study researchers of the University of Indonesia (UI) emphasized that the Indonesian society is being sick. The people are against the practice of money politics, but at the same time, they are easily dragged into the practice, she pointed out. She pointed to report that many people were cheated by offering money to be appointed as civil servants. She added that too much liberalism has made both the elite and the ordinary members of the community equally corrupt. The people have been devoid of the interest to defend mutual interest, she explained. (*)
