Jakarta (Antara) - Persipura Jayapura and Arema Indonesia, the champion and runners-up of the Super Indonesia League (LSI), respectively, will represent Indonesia at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2014. The All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) chose the two teams after a meeting of the association's executive committee, PSSI Secretary General Joko Driyono said here on Friday. "Their selection was based on informal discussions. The teams will fill the two slots in the group phase," he added. Joko, who is also the CEO of PT Liga Indonesia, said the selection of the two clubs was made after a long process of consideration. Both Persipura and Arema Indonesia have earlier represented Indonesia at the AFC. Persipura participated in the AFC Cup in 2011 and reached the quarter-finals stage. Arema Indonesia lost to Al-ettifaq 0-4 on aggregate score at the same tournament. The Indonesian soccer club that participated in the AFC Cup 2013 was Semen Padang. But the soccer team from West Sumatra province lost to East Bengal of India 1-2 on aggregate score. "We hope that the Indonesian soccer clubs advance to the finals or the semi-finals at least. I hope we can achieve either target," he added. The AFC Cup is the only tournament in Asia in which Indonesian soccer clubs can participate. In the past two years, Indonesia has been eliminated from the prestigious Asian Championship Cup. (*)
