Jakarta (Antara) - Indonesian Finance Deputy Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro noted that the US government shutdown will impact the global economy.
"If the shutdown continues much longer, it will affect not only Indonesia's economy but also the global economy. After all, China has deposited its foreign exchange reserves at the US Treasury," the finance deputy minister said here on Thursday.
Bambang pointed out that if the US economy continues to suffer setbacks, developing countries will have difficulty in achieving their growth targets and implementing their economic stabilization programs.
However, he expressed optimism that the US federal government will soon resume operation and that Congress will agree to the new budget scheme, adding that this was not the first time the US government had shut down.
"A similar shutdown has occurred 17 times over the last 30 years. The shortest shutdowns were two days long and the longest ones lasted for 22 days. It has occurred repeatedly, and the US government will surely not allow it to continue for a relatively long period," he said.
According to Bambang, in the face of such pressure, Indonesia should reinforce its economic foundation and improve the performance of its current account transactions, which have recently been a source of concern among investors.
"No matter what global conditions are unfolding, we should strengthen our international conditions and improve our economic foundation, so we can mitigate (any economic crisis) and avoid disturbing domestic investments even if unfavorable global conditions are developing," Bambang said. (*)
