Jayapura (Antara) - A number of Malaysian companies are also responsible for forest fires in Risau, sending thick haze of smoke across the border to neighboring countries. Minister for the Environment Berth Kambuaya said here on Tuesday eight of 14 companies allegedly causing the forest fires are Malaysian oil palm companies. "Currently a team from the Environment Ministry is investigating the fires and any suspects would stand trial," Berth said. Malaysia and Singapore are among countries complaining about the inconvenience caused by the haze. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked for apology for the inconvenience caused. Berth said air pollution in Sumatra mainly in Riau, Batam, and Bengkalis have been above the tolerable limit. The government has taken steps to cope with the forest fires such as by creating artificially made rain. (*)
