Padang, West Sumatra (Antara) - A total of 1,600 dancers will perform the Minangkabau traditional dances in effort to enliven the opening of national Quran reading contest (MTQ) to be participated in by university students across the country on Monday here. "Most of the dancers hailing from the state Andalas University (Unand) and the rest are the senior high school (SMA) students in the West Sumatra provincial city of Padang," said the MTQ organizing committee chairman, Novesar Jamarun, here on Monday. The traditional dances performance was aimed at showing the seriousness of the host namely Unand and Padang State University (UNP) to carry out the 13th Students MTQ, he said. The dancers are expected to perform "tari lilin (candle dance), tari piring (plate dance), tari Pasambahan or welcoming dance, and MTQ Praying dance," he said. The university students MTQ is expected to be opened by Education and Cultural Minister Muhammad Nuh. (*) Reporting by Ikhwan Wahyudi
