Jakarta - The rupiah value fell against the US dollar on Friday on poorer performance of the country's balance of payments in the last quarter of 2012, analysts said. The Indonesian currency traded at 9,665 to the dollar in inter-bank transactions this morning weakening from earlier level of 9,655. The rupiah lost value after the release of data about a deficit of US$7.76 billion in Indonesian balance of payments in the last quarter of last year, Trust Securities' analyst Reza Priyambada said here on Friday. Reza said the deficit in the country's balance of payments caused doubt among the market player that the country would have enough fund for dollar financing. In addition, the falling Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Japan triggered fear of recession putting pressure on Asian currencies including rupiah against the US dollar, he said. "Similarly shrinking French and German GDP signaled worse economic condition in Europe," he added. Chief researcher of Monex Investindo Future Ariston Tjendra said the European economy contracted 0.6 percent in the last quarter of 2012. "The contraction recorded by Germany and France, two main economic powers in Europe also triggered doubt about immediate recovery in 2013," he said. (*)
