Rengat - The regency of Indragiri Hulu in the province of Riau will build 460 hectares of new rice fields this year to reach rice self sufficiency. The central government will finance development of 400 hectares of the rice fields, R Heri Zuliandri, head of the Indragiri Hulu agriculture office, said . The provincial and district administrations of Indragiri Hulu will financed development of the remaining 60 hectares, Heri said here on Saturday. The regency of Indragiri Hulu is set to reach self sufficiency in rice supply to improve the district economy, he said. He said the regency launched a similar program in 2012 with plan to open 600 hectares of rice fields in a number of sub-districts. Implementation, however, reached only 60 percent as work was hampered by floods, he said. He said the cost of building new rice fields is around Rp10 million per hectare. Groups of farmers have been registered to be involved in the development of new rice fields in 2013 to ensure success in the implementation of the program, he said. "The district administration hopes that local farmers would take advantage of the opportunity," he said. (*)
