Bengkulu - Residents of Enggano Island, North Bengkulu Regency, have been threatened by a shortage of staple supplies after boats were unable to leave their docks due to bad weather and high ocean waves. "Besides, commodities such as plantation and agricultural products, as well as fish, including salted fish, cannot be distributed to the markets in Bengkulu," said Enggano citizen Bahri Kaitora, here on Saturday. According to Bahri, the only boat, the MV Pulo Tilo, is not allowed to sail, resulting in several Enggano citizens becoming stranded in Bengkulu, as well as residents from Bengkulu not being able to return to their hometown. Also, the supply of fuel oil in Enggano has also been reduced, he said. He added that agricultural and fisheries products in the region might rot if they cannot reach Bengkulu. Boats usually travel between Bengkulu-Enggano twice a week, though conditions at sea have prevented boats from traveling this route for ten days, he said. "We hope that Bengkulu provincial government will seek alternative transport for the area, since MV Pulo Tilo has reportedly been unable to leave the dock," he noted. (*)
